London Philharmonic Orchestra 2008/09 concert season at Congress Theatre, Eastbourne
Sunday 8 February 2009 | 3.00pm
Nicolai Overture, The Merry Wives of Windsor
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto 2
Tchaikovsky Symphony 5
Nicholas Milton conductor
Andrei Korobeinikov piano
Amidst the torture of the composer's emotional life, Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony seems at once a calming breeze and an energetic gale, as the composer throws dazzling shafts of bright optimism into his typically languorous orchestral shadows. No less Romantic, though perhaps less troubled was Sergei Rachmaninov of whose rapturous Second Piano Concerto the Marilyn Monroe character in the famous movie The Seven Year Itch said: 'Every time I hear it, I go to pieces. It shakes me, it quakes me. It makes me feel goosepimply all over. I don't know where I am or who I am or what I'm doing. Don't stop. Don't ever stop!'
