Saturday 8 November 2008 | 7.30pm
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto 2
Tchaikovsky Suite 3
Gennadi Rozhdestvensky conductor
Viktoria Postnikova piano
1877, and following disastrous marital calamities, Tchaikovsky left Russia, beginning a nomadic existence visiting friends and seasonal retreats, only approaching a settled lifestyle at the country retreat of his sister in Kamenka. 'I feel a certain emptiness...I have to get on with something', he wrote there. But he was soon gripped with inspired fervour: 'Today I began to create something, and the boredom vanished as if by magic', filling his emotional void with the fervent creation of the agile and moving Second Piano Concerto.
