In the last few years I recall that there have been two articles in Sussex Life about Haywards Heath.
I know this town quite well and it has its high points, one of which is the small public park next to Clair Hall. It is, however, in my view an ordinary town with nothing like the interest and appeal of Lewes, which was one of the small English towns in Alec Clifton-Taylor’s television series of some years back. He would never have chosen Haywards Heath as one of his subjects.
Furthermore, Haywards Heath is very much the poor relation of Lindfield, whose High Street has been highly praised by Nicholas Pevsner and others. I strongly agree with their view. The best time to see this street is in the spring, when the crocuses are in full bloom. The number of listed buildings in Haywards Heath is not high at 48. These must be nearly as many in Alfriston, which has a population number of under 1,000.
Yours sincerely K.Y.A. Fraser
